Tennis I-Diploma
In this extract from a recent I-Diploma Final Written Assessment there is an excellent example of how standard evaluations can give a SAQ¨ Trainer valuable information about a performerÕs improvements in key respects. Also illustrated is how keen a performer will be to understand more about what they are doing and why.

Population group: Tennis, in top 20 of Junior National Squad, female, 15yrs of age
Evaluation
In the LTA tennis specific tests the player increased her score from 20/80 to 33/80. This is a significant improvement in an 8 week period.
The programme made a significant improvement to my playerÕs tennis specific movement ability. Her LTA physical attribute score considerably increased and she made a clear SAQ¨ improvement when subjectively evaluating her performance on court. In particular her 1 Ð 2 step quickness significantly increased.
The SAQ¨ Continuum was easy to implement as it followed an uncomplicated, logical progression. The player also enjoyed the programme and was interested to know the rationale behind each stage and each drill. As we went through the programme it became clear that mechanics are vitally important in every stage of the Continuum. I have learnt that if the mechanics stage is rushed the rest of the Continuum can actually become counterproductive.
On reflection the playerÕs vertical jumping ability did not improve. This was probably because I did not put enough emphasis on jumping mechanics and also plyometrics in the Explosion phase. Therefore the next training cycle will focus on vertical jumping power and plyometrics. We will also focus on Jelly Ballª drills in the explosion phase as we failed to do any of these.
The SAQ¨ Programme has proved a great success in fulfilling my playerÕs aims and objectives. I now feel confident to rework the programme for other individual and groups of tennis players and indeed other sports.
